I taught all of my kids to read at home as they were homeschooled for part of their elementary years. It never crossed my mind to use anything other than phonics. I was shocked when I learned that this was not the case for many kids. I now teach dyslexic students and can only imagine how horrible whole language was/is for dyslexic kids. I see the trend is moving away from that to what is commonly referred to as SOR programs. I am OG trained and advocate for my students who are still expected to do all their classwork and homework despite not reading at that level.
I, too was shocked that whole language was being used. I thought the debate had been settled when I was a kid that a phonics-type approach was best.
